Dishwashers fail in two ways in Pasco County: they stop draining, or they stop cleaning. The first is usually a part. The second is usually the water.

Not draining
Bosch E24 is the code we see most, and it means a drain blockage. Before you book, check three things: the filter in the base of the tub, whether the drain hose has a high loop or an air gap at the sink, and whether your garbage disposal knockout plug was ever removed when the dishwasher was installed. That last one is a genuinely common fault in newer homes — the plumber installs the disposal, the appliance installer connects the dishwasher drain, and nobody knocks out the plug. The dishwasher then never drains properly from day one.
Not cleaning — and the honest version of the hard water story
If your dishes come out gritty or filmed and the machine is running its full cycle, the usual culprits are a scaled-over spray arm, a clogged filter, or scale on the heating element. That is a water chemistry problem as much as an appliance problem.
You’ll see repair companies quote a precise hardness figure for Pasco water. We read the actual reports: Pasco County Utilities does not publish hardness in its Consumer Confidence Reports — 2022, 2023 or 2024. It’s a secondary standard and isn’t required. Anyone citing Pasco’s grains-per-gallon from a CCR is making it up.
What is documented: the nearest published regional measurement is the City of Tampa’s 2024 report at 185 mg/L, or 10.8 grains per gallon, which is “very hard” on the USGS scale (anything over 180 mg/L). The USGS has documented since 1965 that Floridan aquifer water runs above 180 ppm across much of Florida because of the state’s karst limestone geology. So: hard water here is real, it does scale your spray arms and heating element, and a descale plus a rinse-aid habit will do more for your dishes than a new dishwasher will.
Common questions
How much does dishwasher repair cost?
From $179 for a door gasket. A drain pump or circulation motor is $225–$305, an inlet valve $199 and a spray arm assembly $189, flat rate with parts, labour and tax included.
My dishwasher is not draining. Is it broken?
Often it is a blocked filter or air gap rather than a fault, and that is worth checking before you call. If the pump itself has failed you will usually hear it humming without moving water.
My dishes come out cloudy or gritty. Is that the machine?
Usually the water rather than the appliance, particularly on a private well. Hard water scales the spray arms and the heater. We will tell you if the fix is a part or a water treatment.
Is a dishwasher worth repairing?
Under about eight years old and out of warranty, almost always. A $179 to $305 repair against $700 or more for a new machine plus installation is not a close call.
