Ice Maker Repair in Land O’ Lakes, FL

Ice makers fail more often in Pasco County than they should, and the reason is almost never the ice maker. It’s the water going into it.

Why it keeps happening

An ice maker is the appliance component with the smallest water orifices and the longest dwell times — water sits in the fill tube and the valve between cycles. That makes it the first thing in your house to show a water chemistry problem, long before your dishwasher or your kettle does.

Two things are working against it here. First, hardness: the USGS classifies water above 180 mg/L as “very hard,” and the nearest published regional figure — the City of Tampa’s 2024 report — is 185 mg/L, or 10.8 grains per gallon. Second, if you’re on a private well, and 129,980 Pasco County residents are according to the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s 2024 report, untreated Floridan aquifer water can carry iron and hydrogen sulphide on top of the hardness.

What actually fixes it

  1. Change the filter on schedule. Six months, not “when the light comes on and I get around to it.” A saturated filter is worse than no filter.
  2. If you’re on a well, treat the water. No ice maker survives untreated hard well water indefinitely, and we’d rather tell you that than sell you the same $219 module every eighteen months.
  3. Check the supply line routing. A pinched or kinked line behind the fridge — extremely common when a refrigerator has been pushed back into place after cleaning — produces exactly the same symptoms as a failed valve, and costs nothing to fix.

We’ll tell you if it’s not worth it

On a refrigerator over twelve years old with a failed ice maker and nothing else wrong, a countertop ice maker for $120 is often the better answer than a $219 repair on a unit near the end of its life. We say so.

Common questions

How much does ice maker repair cost?

From $129 for a supply line replacement. A module or assembly is $219, a fill tube heater $165 and a dispenser motor $225, flat rate with parts, labour and tax.

Why does my ice maker keep failing?

Nine times out of ten it is the water, not the ice maker. Ice makers have the smallest orifices and the longest dwell times of anything in the kitchen, so hardness and iron hit them first — which is why they fail repeatedly on untreated well water.

Is it worth repairing an ice maker on an old fridge?

On a refrigerator over about twelve years old with nothing else wrong, a countertop ice maker is often the better spend. We will say so.

How long after a repair before I get ice?

Around 24 hours for the first full harvest, and the first two or three batches are worth discarding while the line clears.
