The Florida-specific failure: surge-damaged control boards

This is the repair that is genuinely more common here than almost anywhere in the country, and it’s the one to plan around.

Florida records the highest lightning density of any state in the country, at 305 lightning events per square mile (Vaisala Xweather, 2025). Florida led the nation in lightning insurance claims in both 2024 and 2025 — 5,136 claims and $186 million in insured damage in 2025 alone, according to the Insurance Information Institute. Raymond James Stadium in Tampa logged 309 hours of lightning warning time in 2025, second only to Miami Gardens.

An oven control board is a sensitive piece of electronics wired permanently into your house. The symptom is unmistakable: the range worked yesterday, there was a storm, and today the display is dead or the oven won’t heat while the surface burners still work. We can’t stop that happening, but we’ll tell you plainly that a whole-home surge protector costs less than one control board replacement, and after the second one you’re past the point where it’s a coincidence.

Induction and double wall ovens

In the premium tiers around Starkey Ranch, Cheval and the larger Connerton homes we see a lot of built-in double wall ovens and induction cooktops. Those are almost always worth repairing rather than replacing — not because the parts are cheap, but because replacement means matching a cutout size that may no longer be manufactured, and that turns a $600 repair into a cabinetry project.

Common questions

How much does oven or range repair cost?

From $179 for a bake or broil element. A gas igniter is $219, a surface burner switch $185 and a temperature sensor $195. Control boards run $310–$595 because the board itself is expensive.

My oven will not heat but the light works. What is it?

On an electric oven, usually the bake element or the temperature sensor. On gas, usually the igniter. All three are in the $179 to $219 band.

Is a cracked glass cooktop repairable?

No. A cracked ceramic surface has to be replaced, and on most ranges the cost approaches a new appliance. We will tell you that on the phone rather than charging a diagnostic to confirm it.

My oven temperature is wrong. Can you calibrate it?

Yes. Most ovens drift over time and can be recalibrated, though if the sensor itself has failed it needs replacing at $195.
